Passengers applaud revamped NRZ Expo Train, hailing a return to glory

Passengers who embarked on the National Railways of Zimbabwe’s (NRZ) special Harare-Mutare service for the Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo have returned with overwhelmingly positive reviews, commending the parastatal for a unique and enjoyable travel experience that has sparked hope for the future of rail travel in the country.

The specially configured train, which featured dedicated dining, sleeper, and a wildly popular dance coach, was launched to ferry attendees to the premier tourism event in Mutare.

Despite initial public scepticism over its retrofitted coaches, which were heavily criticised on social media prior to departure, those who actually used the service reported a journey marked by comfort, camaraderie, and efficient service.

The unique offerings, including a full bar and catering service, onboard Wi-Fi, and modernised restrooms, were highlighted as key differentiators.

The dance coach, in particular, was singled out as a major success, transforming the journey into a vibrant, social event where passengers could mingle and celebrate.

“I must admit, I had my doubts after seeing the pictures online. But the experience was entirely different. The atmosphere was electric, especially in the dance coach. It was more than just a trip; it was an event. It felt like a real step back towards the quality service NRZ was once known for,” said Ellen Chimombe.

Another passenger, Farai Chikwava, praised the practicality of the sleeper coaches.

“For a journey of that length, having a comfortable berth to relax in was a game-changer. It was clean, functional, and far superior to the stress of a bus or the cost of driving yourself. This is exactly the kind of service Zimbabwe needs,” said Chikwava.

The positive passenger feedback appears to validate the NRZ’s response to its initial critics.

The parastatal had acknowledged the public’s “constructive and inspiring” feedback, vowing to use it to inform future services.

For many, the successful run signals a potential renaissance for the national rail operator.

The combination of practical amenities and inventive social spaces has demonstrated a blueprint for how NRZ can reclaim its place as a beloved and vital part of Zimbabwe’s transport infrastructure, turning a journey into a destination in itself.
