The 23rd annual King Mzilikazi Commemorations, also known as Umgobho we Nkosi uMzilikazi, were a resounding success, drawing thousands to celebrate Ndebele culture, history, and rites.
The event took place on 7 September 2025 at the Mhlanhlandlela Heritage Site in Matobo District, Matabeleland North Province.
Presiding over the celebrations was Sipho Gama, Chairperson of the Mthwakazi ka Mzilikazi Cultural Association, who welcomed approximately 3 000 attendees, including traditional leaders from across Matabeleland and neighbouring South Africa.
The President of the Chiefs Council, Chief Mtshane Khumalo, was also in attendance, adding gravitas to the occasion.
During the commemorations, attendees were educated on the history and legacy of King Mzilikazi, the founder of the Ndebele Kingdom.
Cultural presentations, traditional dances, and storytelling sessions highlighted the achievements and enduring influence of the monarch, emphasizing the importance of preserving cultural heritage for future generations.
Speaking to the crowd, Gama highlighted the significance of the event.
“These commemorations are not only a celebration of King Mzilikazi’s life and leadership, but also a platform to pass on our history, values, and traditions to the younger generation,” he said.
Commentators and cultural experts have commended the commemorations, noting their role in fostering unity and pride among the Ndebele people.
“Events like these are critical in promoting cultural identity and educating both the youth and the wider public about the rich history of our leaders. It strengthens community cohesion and ensures that the legacy of King Mzilikazi continues to inspire generations,” said a cultural analyst, Buhle Nkomo.
In addition to traditional leaders, attendees included educators, local government officials, and members of civil society, all of whom took part in discussions on cultural preservation and the importance of protecting heritage sites such as Mhlanhlandlela.
The programme also featured interactive sessions where young participants engaged with elders to learn more about traditional governance, customs, and the historical journey of the Ndebele people.
The commemoration concluded with a procession and cultural performances that showcased traditional attire, music, and dances unique to the Ndebele community.
Observers noted that the event was well-organized, with adequate facilities and arrangements that allowed attendees to fully participate in and appreciate the rich cultural displays.
With its blend of education, celebration, and cultural pride, the 23rd King Mzilikazi Commemorations reinforced the enduring significance of the Ndebele heritage.
It also highlighted the importance of continued support for cultural institutions and heritage sites across Zimbabwe, ensuring that the stories and values of historical figures like King Mzilikazi remain alive and relevant.
