Foden and Haaland fire City to emotional Manchester derby win

Phil Foden and Erling Haaland fired Manchester City to victory against Manchester United in an emotional Premier League derby today.

Foden opened the scoring in the 197th Manchester derby, heading past Altay Bayindir following some brilliant footwork by Jeremy Doku.

United looked good in the first half, pressing and countering well but failed to generate clear cut chances, with Benjamin Sesko, on his first Premier League start, seeing his shot from range easily saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma on his City debut.

Early in the second half, the game was settled as Doku found Haaland who calmly chipped Bayindir, chosen to start ahead of deadline day signing Senne Lammens.

United’s heads dropped and City were gifted chance after chance to extend their lead, though Haaland and Tijjani Reijnders were both guilty of missing sitters.

A third goal did indeed come when sloppy play from Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire gifted the home side possession, and no one was back to stop Haaland from running through United’s entire half and scoring his eighth derby goal.

Bryan Mbeumo was one shining light for the Red Devils and nearly scored a speculator volley only to be denied by a brilliant diving save from Donnarumma.

Otherwise, it was another poor defeat for Ruben Amorim’s side, who have begun the season with just one win in five games across all competitions.

After back-to-back defeats, this was a much-needed result and performance for Pep Guardiola’s team and a message to their rivals that they are certainly not out of the title race.
