Chivhayo donates 20 more ambulances, takes swipe at critics

Businessman and philanthropist Wicknell Chivhayo has announced the donation of 20 additional ambulances to support Zimbabwe’s health sector, only days after handing over 10 ambulances to each of the country’s 10 provinces.

The latest pledge, revealed through his official X (formerly Twitter) account, comes amid criticism from opposition figures such as Advocate Fadzayi Mahere.

Chivhayo, however, dismissed the attacks and reaffirmed his commitment to complementing government efforts in strengthening service delivery.

Writing in a characteristically direct tone, Chivhayo said,“Ini handipo ndiri ku Kenya ndaudzwa kuti @advocatemahere ari kudya marasha kumusha 😂😂🤣. Ndino fara kana nyaya ye ma Ambulance yakurwadza zimhandara. Ini handisi kurwa newe ndiri kungoti 2030 ndeya Emmerson handina zvimwe zvakawanda zvandiri kutaura. Inga ndakanyora ndichiedza kubva pasi pemoyo kutsanangura how I arrived at that decision to make those donations. Saka na izvozvo kuti uzive kuti handisi kurwa newe I have ordered 20 more ambulances which I will donate using the same criteria. Musawanze hasha Vatete ZANU PF CHIORORO…”

The flamboyant philanthropist made headlines earlier this week when he facilitated the distribution of 10 ambulances to Zimbabwe’s 10 provincial capitals, a move widely praised by Government officials, health workers and members of the public.

The gesture was described as timely, given the pressing need for well-equipped ambulances in public hospitals and rural clinics.

With this new consignment, Chivhayo has doubled his contribution, underscoring his stated ambition to align his philanthropic work with national goals under Vision 2030, President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s blueprint for transforming Zimbabwe into an upper-middle-income economy.

While critics have accused him of seeking political favour, his supporters argue that his donations are saving lives and easing the burden on a health system still recovering from years of underfunding and the brain drain.

Health analysts noted that additional ambulances would strengthen emergency response, particularly in remote districts where transport has long been a challenge.

“We cannot deny the impact of such gestures. More ambulances mean faster responses to accidents, maternal emergencies, and critical cases,” said one medical practitioner in Harare.

Chivhayo, however, insisted that his motivation was not political rivalry but a desire to make a tangible difference.

The businessman has in recent months become one of the most prominent individual donors in the health sector, drawing both praise and criticism.

For now, his latest donation marks another significant boost to provincial health services—one that will directly touch the lives of ordinary Zimbabweans.
