Zimbabwean Cleric appointed Bishop in Canada

Story by Fungai Jachi

Zimbabweans continue to make their mark on the international stage, with the ordination of Reverend Naboth Manzongo to the Sacred Order of Bishops and his installation as the Fourteenth Bishop of the Diocese of Rupert’s Land in Canada being the latest milestone.

The Diocese of Rupert’s Land is part of the Ecclesiastical Province of the Northern Lights under the Anglican Church of Canada.

Reverend Manzongo has made history by becoming the first Black Bishop and the first African to hold the position in the diocese. He succeeds Bishop Geoffrey Woodcroft, who announced his retirement in October last year.

Ordained as a deacon in 2008 and as a priest in 2009 in the Diocese of Harare, Reverend Manzongo began his ministry in Zimbabwe.

He served at the Church of St Mary Magdalene in Avondaleand later as rector of St Joseph’s in Dzivarasekwa.

His journey from Harare to the international pulpit underscores Zimbabwe’s growing footprint in global religious leadership.
