Zimbabwe Hosts Landmark Meeting to Strengthen Internal Audit in Africa

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe – The Government of Zimbabwe has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening governance and accountability across Africa with the official opening of the Steering Committee for the African Association of Internal Auditors General (AAIAG). The meeting was inaugurated today by Hon. Deputy Minister of Finance, K. D. Mnangagwa, marking what officials described as a “milestone in continental financial integrity.”

Speaking at the launch, the Deputy Minister underscored the indispensable role of internal auditors in safeguarding public trust and enhancing institutional resilience. “Internal auditors are not just evaluators,” he said. “They are enablers of performance, guardians of accountability, and architects of credible institutions.”

The AAIAG is set to provide a collaborative platform for audit professionals across Africa, focusing on standardizing audit methodologies, strengthening audit independence, and expanding the use of data analytics and risk management in public finance. It will also promote cross-border collaboration, ensuring that best practices can be shared and adopted throughout the continent.

Officials highlighted that the integrity of fiscal policies and the sustainability of development programs hinge on robust internal control systems. In this context, internal audit must evolve beyond a reactive compliance function to become a strategic advisory tool that informs policy, anticipates risks, and safeguards public resources.

Zimbabwe’s government pledged strong support for the initiative, noting that credible and accountable audit practices are essential for both domestic reforms and international confidence in African institutions.

“With the launch of AAIAG, we are entering a new era,” the Deputy Minister said. “An era where internal audit is respected and relied upon as a cornerstone of African public sector excellence.”

The gathering in Victoria Falls is expected to shape the continent’s internal audit agenda and reinforce Africa’s collective drive toward transparency, efficiency, and sustainable development.
