Over 5000 Shurugwi miners benefit from US$1 million equipment facility

More than 5,000 small-scale miners in Shurugwi District have benefitted from a US$1 million mining equipment facility, in yet another demonstration of the Government’s commitment to empowering youths and women in Zimbabwe’s mining sector.

The initiative forms part of the Second Republic’s broader vision to promote inclusive growth, strengthen local value chains, and accelerate progress toward Vision 2030.

As one of Zimbabwe’s key foreign currency earners, the mining sector continues to receive strategic support under President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration, particularly through programmes that promote beneficiation, value addition, and community empowerment.

Speaking to the media yesterday, Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Owen Ncube, described it as a model for community-driven empowerment.

“This project showcases the value of PPPs that boost GDP growth and improve livelihoods through job creation, productivity, and increased incomes. The youth have been empowered to engage in safe, organised, and formal mining activities under proper supervision, ensuring accountability of every ounce of our minerals,” said Minister Ncube.

According to Chengxi Investments General Manager, Simon Karimanzira, the initiative aligns with the company’s community development philosophy, which focuses on identifying local needs and mobilising idle resources to create sustainable growth.

“We believe in asset mapping using idle machinery and untapped human capital for the benefit of the community. Our goal is to ensure communities directly benefit from the natural resources within their areas,” said Karimanzira.

The Shurugwi initiative, spearheaded by local mining giant Chengxi Investments, has provided much-needed tools and machinery to small-scale miners, addressing long-standing challenges related to equipment shortages and operational inefficiencies.

“We want to thank Chengxi Investments for this developmental programme because it has given us new hope and belief. In the past, we were faced with a lot of challenges, among them the shortage of mining equipment,” said one beneficiary.

For many women in the district, the project represents more than economic empowerment, it is a catalyst for social transformation and equality.

“This project will not only empower us as women but will play a key role in achieving Vision 2030. We are proud to be part of this transformation,” said another miner.

The project has also been hailed by local and national leaders as a practical demonstration of Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) and joint ventures that promote equitable development.

Shurugwi North Legislator, Joseph Mpasi, commended the initiative for aligning with the national vision of inclusive development.

“This project speaks directly to the Government’s philosophy of leaving no one and no place behind. It has received a strong buy-in from the local community because it is transforming lives and empowering young people to contribute meaningfully to our economy,” he said.

Government has reaffirmed its dedication to strengthening youth and women participation in mining through equipment support, training, and the creation of an enabling policy environment.

The Shurugwi initiative stands as a testament to what can be achieved when the public and private sectors work together to harness the country’s vast mineral wealth for inclusive and sustainable development.
