ViCAZ Steps Up Fight Against Drug and Substance Abuse

The Visionary Cadres Association of Zimbabwe (ViCAZ) has intensified its nationwide campaign to combat drug and substance abuse among youths, in line with President Mnangagwa’s call for a drug-free and economically productive generation.

In an interview yesterday, ViCAZ National Secretary General Innocent Ngenga said the organisation was inspired by President Mnangagwa’s National Youth Day address urging young people to shun drugs and focus on empowerment initiatives.

“Our organisation was inspired by the speech of His Excellency Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa on National Youth Day. He implored the youth to shun drugs and substance abuse and to focus on economic activities which will empower them. What also pushed us are the day-to-day challenges faced by youths due to drugs and substance abuse,” said Ngenga.

He said ViCAZ has referred more than 200 youths for rehabilitation across the country and is working with stakeholders under the Demand Reduction, Supply Reduction, Community Reintegration, and Harm Reduction pillars to tackle the problem.

Since its establishment in 2022, the organisation has reached over 30,000 people through awareness campaigns aimed at educating communities about the dangers of drug abuse.

“We adopt a Whole-of-Government Approach, ensuring coordinated action in addressing the challenge of drug and substance abuse. We operate under the Demand Reduction Pillar, chaired by the Ministry of Youth, and collaborate with various ministries working towards eliminating drug and substance abuse in our communities,” he said.

Ngenga said ViCAZ has a national presence with structures in all ten provinces and several districts, each with coordinators driving anti-drug programmes.

“Anyone who wishes to become part of the ViCAZ community can easily do so by reaching out to our provincial or district representatives. Being a ViCAZ member provides an opportunity to partner with the Government of Zimbabwe in advancing national development goals, particularly in raising awareness and taking a stand against drug and substance abuse,” he said.

ViCAZ also sets up information desks and banners during outreach activities to keep communities engaged after events.

“We have big banners with contact numbers and information desks where people can learn more about drug abuse and the support available. These platforms help us share knowledge and guide youths to stay drug-free and productive,” he said.

Ngenga said the organisation takes pride in success stories of rehabilitation and recovery.

“Several young people from Mutare, Marondera, Harare and Beitbridge have managed to overcome drug addiction and rebuild their lives. One young man from Marondera, assisted by our Provincial Outreach Coordinator who is also a pastor, is now living a positive, drug-free life,” he said.

“Our goal is to see a drug-free Zimbabwe — to see every youth staying away from drugs and the affected getting all the necessary assistance,” said Ngenga.
