Warriors Coach Nees Awaits Fate as ZIFA Concludes Review

The future of Zimbabwe’s national team coach, Michael Nees, hangs in the balance as the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) is set to make a final decision on his position this week. This follows mounting public pressure after the Warriors’ humiliating defeat to Lesotho in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

ZIFA president Nqobile Magwizi confirmed that the association’s technical committee, led by Tafadzwa Benza, has conducted a comprehensive performance review focused on the coach and the team’s recent results. Under Nees’ leadership, the Warriors have managed only two victories, a record that has drawn intense criticism from fans and pundits.

Magwizi emphasized that the association is following a structured process rather than reacting impulsively to the poor run of form.

“We have the technical committee… doing a performance management process, or rather, a review of our performance and, of course, trying to understand what went wrong, where, and why,” stated Magwizi.

The findings of this review will be presented to the ZIFA Executive Committee, which will then determine the German coach’s fate. Magwizi assured that the process would be transparent and that the findings would be made public.

Since his appointment, Nees has faced scrutiny over his tactical decisions and team selections, with many questioning his understanding of the local football environment. The upcoming executive committee meeting will be decisive, determining whether Nees will continue in his role or become the latest in a line of short-tenured Warriors coaches.
