Murder and Robbery Suspect Arrested After Fatal Shooting of Police Officer in Sanyati

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of 41-year-old Vengesai Jabulani Mutasa following a deadly shooting incident at ZRP Sanyati on Monday morning, which claimed the life of Constable Courage Muchechesi.

In a statement issued by ZRP National Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi yesterday , police described the incident as a “callous and brutal act” that has left the law enforcement community in mourning.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Vengesai Jabulani Mutasa (41) after the callous and brutal shooting to death of Constable Courage Muchechesi at ZRP Sanyati early today,” read the statement.

According to police, the suspect had earlier shot and seriously injured Detective Constable Ngwenya of the CID Homicide section, who was part of a team attempting to arrest him in connection with the murder of businessman Joseph Mutangadura in August 2025. Mutangadura’s killing had sparked a widespread manhunt across Mashonaland West Province.

“After shooting Constable Muchechesi, the suspect went on to rob Abraham Mayavo (30) of US$5 as he was in the process of making a report to the police,” Commissioner Nyathi said, describing the suspect’s actions as reckless and violent.

Police said Mutasa’s arrest was made possible through the swift response of residents from Sanyati, Kadoma, Chakari, and Patchway, who mobilized and worked closely with security forces.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police commends members of the public in Sanyati, Kadoma, Chakari, and Patchway who quickly mobilized and assisted to effect an arrest on the suspect,” read the statement.

Authorities have assured the public that comprehensive investigations are underway and that additional details will be released once preliminary inquiries are complete. The arrest brings to an end a tense morning in Sanyati, where the suspect had initially resisted capture.

The ZRP reiterated its commitment to ensuring that those who attack or endanger the lives of police officers and citizens are brought to justice.

“No act of violence against police officers will go unpunished,” Commissioner Nyathi emphasized.

Police said Mutasa remains in custody and is expected to face multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, and armed robbery.
