Gangarabwe Primary School rises through Public-Private Partnership

Gangarabwe Primary School in Hurungwe has undergone a remarkable transformation from humble pole-and-dagga structures to a modern educational complex, thanks to a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between the Government of Zimbabwe and the Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe (MMCZ). The milestone project, valued at nearly US$300,000, marks a major step in improving access to quality education in rural areas and promoting inclusive development under Vision 2030.

The newly completed first phase features a six-classroom double-storey block with integrated ablution facilities, a standard classroom block, and a fully equipped computer laboratory. This development has replaced the makeshift classrooms that once exposed learners and teachers to harsh weather and health risks.

A second phase is already on the cards and will include the construction of an administration block, an Early Childhood Development (ECD) block, the installation of a solar power system, expansion of water infrastructure, and erection of a security fence around the ECD section. The comprehensive plan reflects a strong commitment to building sustainable and modern learning environments for rural communities.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, yesterday Government representatives praised the initiative as a shining example of how partnerships can drive rural transformation. Special Advisor to the President, Dr. Joram Gumbo, noted, “What I have witnessed here is not merely the construction of school buildings but it is the building of hope, dignity, and opportunity. The transformation from rudimentary shelters to a modern educational complex is a testament to what can be achieved when government, corporate partners, and communities unite.”

Echoing this sentiment, MMCZ Director, Mrs. Thandiwe Mlobane, said the corporation’s involvement aligns with the government’s broader development vision. “We wanted to provide rural learners with a safe and dignified learning environment. Our work complements government’s Vision 2030 goals by ensuring that no child is left behind,” she said.

Matonhodze Village Head, Johanna Matonhodze also welcomed the development, describing it as a game-changer for local education.

“This school was originally a satellite school serving children who could not walk eight kilometres to nearby schools. These new structures bridge the infrastructure gap and provide safer learning spaces,” she remarked.

A teacher at Gangarabwe Primary, Clever Muchinako expressed heartfelt gratitude for the life-changing development.

“Before these buildings, our children were learning in makeshift classrooms exposed to environmental hazards. This is a motivation for us as teachers to work hard and match this new standard,” he said.

The transformation of Gangarabwe Primary stands as a model for rural infrastructure development proving that collaboration between public institutions and private entities can deliver tangible progress. With its modern facilities, the school not only enhances the quality of education but also restores pride and optimism within the community. The project embodies the spirit of inclusive growth, ensuring that every Zimbabwean child, regardless of location, has access to a safe, modern, and inspiring learning environment.
