Court cancels arrest warrant for Robert Mugabe Jr

A Harare magistrate has cancelled the warrant of arrest issued against Robert Tinotenda Mugabe, son of the late former President Robert Gabriel Mugabe, after he failed to appear in court for a scheduled remand.

Mugabe Jr, who is out on bail, voluntarily appeared before the court on Friday accompanied by his lawyer, Mr Arshiel Mugiya. Magistrate Artwell Sanyatwe accepted his explanation, set aside the warrant, and fined him US$30 for missing Thursday’s session. He was ordered to return on November 13 for the start of his trial.

Mugabe Jr was arrested last month during a police traffic operation in Harare after allegedly driving against traffic along Second Street Extension (Sam Nujoma Extension). Upon being stopped, police reportedly found two sachets of dagga, rizla rolling papers, and a dagga crusher in his sling bag.

The recovered drugs, weighing about two grammes and valued at US$30, were verified by authorities. He faces charges of unlawful possession of dangerous drugs under Zimbabwe’s Dangerous Drugs Act.
