PSL to decide on expanding league to 20 teams

The future of Zimbabwe’s top-flight football league will take centre stage next week when the Premier Soccer League (PSL) holds an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) on November 19 to discuss the proposed expansion of the league from 18 to 20 teams.

The proposal, which was initiated by the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), has sparked widespread debate within football circles as stakeholders weigh the potential benefits and logistical challenges of the move.

ZIFA is also advocating for the creation of a long-awaited National First Division, designed to act as a feeder league to the PSL and strengthen the country’s football development structure.

However, these proposals can only move forward after securing formal approval from the ZIFA board and the adoption of constitutional amendments to align with the new league framework.

If approved, the restructuring could mark a significant shift in Zimbabwean football, potentially increasing competition, widening talent identification, and enhancing regional representation across the country.
