Harare–Beitbridge Road Project Now 53.2km From Completion

The Harare–Beitbridge Highway rehabilitation project has entered its final phase, with authorities confirming that only 53.2 kilometres now remain before the long-awaited upgrade is fully completed.

In an update released yesterday, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development announced the opening of a new 3km, four-lane stretch at Ngundu, pushing the total completed work to 528.8km.

“Just three days ago, we had 56.5km to go. Now, we are thrilled to announce that the Harare–Beitbridge Road Project is only 53.2km from completion,” the Ministry said in a statement yesterday.

The Government described the progress as a major milestone in its infrastructure modernisation programme, noting that the project is now firmly in the home stretch.

“We are in the final stretch. The finish line is in sight. The  new Ngundu section had already been opened to traffic to ease movement along the busy regional corridor,” the Ministry said,

The massive upgrade one of the country’s flagship infrastructure undertakings has been executed through a consortium of local contractors.

According to the Ministry, Bitumen World remains the lead contributor with 125km completed, followed by Fossil Contracting at 118km. Masimba Holdings has delivered 98km, Exodus and Company 90.6km, while Tensor Systems has completed 90km. Trial Construction has contributed 7.2km to date.

Authorities say the continued progress demonstrates the capacity of local contractors and highlights Government’s commitment to modernising Zimbabwe’s key transport arteries to support trade, tourism and regional integration.

The Harare–Beitbridge Highway is one of Southern Africa’s busiest routes, linking Zimbabwe to South Africa and facilitating both domestic and international cargo movement. Upon completion, the corridor is expected to significantly improve safety, reduce travel times and enhance efficiency for commercial transport operators.

Transport industry players say the project’s advancement is expected to bring relief to motorists who have long endured congestion and delays along the route. Businesses relying on the highway for freight and distribution have also welcomed the steady progress.

The Ministry urged motorists to continue exercising caution along sections still under construction and assured the public that remaining works are being fast-tracked.

“Our teams are working tirelessly to deliver a world-class highway. We appreciate the public’s patience as we move toward final completion,” the Ministry said.

Completion of the remaining 53.2km is expected to unlock the full benefits of the upgraded corridor, positioning the route as one of the country’s most strategic economic assets.
