Civil servants wellness day strengthens unity, productivity in Mwenezi

More than 400 civil servants, from Mwenezi North and West, gathered at Maranda High School sporting grounds for the annual Civil Servants Wellness Day, a flagship event aimed at promoting health, unity and teamwork across Government departments.

The event, one of the district’s largest inter-ministerial gatherings this year, showcased the Second Republic’s commitment to building a healthy, motivated and efficient public service as Zimbabwe advances towards Vision 2030.

Sport and Recreation Officer, Andrew Ruzvidzo, highlighted the importance of building a resilient and energised workforce.

“A healthy workforce is a productive workforce. Today’s activities are not just for fun they are essential for building energy, focus and resilience in our public service,” he said

Public Service Commission representative Last Gondo encouraged civil servants to prioritise wellness as part of their daily routines.

“Wellness is more than exercise; it is a lifestyle. Taking care of your mind and body reduces stress and improves your effectiveness at work.”

Education specialist, Mabura stressed the role of sport in child development, while Mapani urged civil servants to embrace regular physical activity to reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases.

The day featured football, volleyball, netball, tug of war, chess, darts and aerobics, with teams from Mwenezi North and West competing in a friendly yet competitive atmosphere. Mwenezi North dominated football and chess, while Mwenezi West stood out in netball and men’s tug of war. Individual brilliance was also evident, with Baloyi being named man of the match in men’s netball, while Mbiza and Matshuma distinguished themselves in women’s netball. Mafumba led the way in men’s volleyball, Makamanzi excelled in women’s volleyball, and Saul Mativenga delivered an outstanding performance in football. Winners received branded T-shirts donated by supporting partners.

Stakeholder contributions played a key role in the event’s success. Artie Cools provided T-shirts and refreshments, Bubi Valley Conservancy supported the feeding programme, and civil servants from Mwenezi North assisted with catering, reflecting the participatory development philosophy championed by the Second Republic.

The Civil Servants Wellness Day reaffirmed that national development thrives on a strong, healthy and united workforce. One participant captured the spirit of the day, remarking:

“As we continue implementing NDS1 priorities, the unity and wellness displayed today show that in Mwenezi, no one and no place will be left behind.”
