The recent Zim-Zam Energy Projects Summit held in Victoria Falls under the theme, “Powering Zimbabwe and Zambia’s Sustainable Energy Future,” marked a significant milestone in Zimbabwe and Zambia’s pursuit of energy security, sustainable development and political diplomacy.
The event which was attended by governments, private investors, and international stakeholders’ representatives sought to develop energy project plans built upon the spirit of collaboration and unity of purpose.
The resolutions and discussions that ensued during the summit have the potential to transform the energy landscape of both nations towards fostering economic growth, reducing poverty, and improving the quality of life for citizens.
In summary the discussion and resolutions hinged of five critical areas being Grid Expansion and Liberalization, Renewable Energy and Investment, Regional Cooperation, the Batoka Gorge expansion and Energy Infrastructure Development.
A quick look and analysis at these five key areas will note that emphasis on grid expansion and liberalization is a welcome move that will attract private investment and expertise, eventually leading to increased energy access to remote areas. In addition, this would ensure a boost in the production outputs and increased access to otherwise remote areas. Furthermore, the move would witness the creation of employment opportunities while stimulating local economies.
Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of modern day and transitioning to renewable energy sources like solar and wind power is crucial to mitigating its impacts.
The focus on renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind and hydro power is also commendable, as it will reduce dependence on fossil fuels and mitigate the impact of climate change. Renewable energy is abundant and can be replenished naturally and this ensures a sustainable energy supply chain in the long run.
On its part, the Zim-Zam initiative’s flagship project, the Batoka Gorge, valued to an estimated US$5 billion, is no doubt poised to add significant power generating capacity to the regional grid thereby enhancing energy security and creating room for electricity trade.
Upon completion, the power plant would generate a total of 2 400 megawatts (MW) to be split equally between the two neighbouring countries.
The Zim-Zam summit’s commitment to regional cooperation is laudable. By leveraging the Southern African Power Pool, both countries can optimize their energy resources, share expertise, and create a robust energy market.
The need for urgent grid infrastructure investment is paramount as it will go a long way in complementing efforts around regional energy trade and access.
However, to translate these resolutions into tangible results, there is need for Government to ensure the availability of resources, hence commitments to the success of this project should be reflected and imprinted in national budgets.
Furthermore, there is need for governments to ensure policy consistence, transparency, and investor-friendly frameworks that would drive innovation and investment.
While all operational aspects of the partnership seem to well defined, the administrative components ought not to be ignored.
By simplifying procedures, reducing bureaucracy, and ensuring transparency, a favourable business environment that attracts investors, stimulates entrepreneurship, and fosters competition is created.
Therefore, attention must also be given to administrative element of the project to ensure maximum benefit.
The Zim-Zam Energy Projects Summit has set the stage for a brighter energy future. It’s now up to stakeholders to turn the discussions and resolutions of the convention into actionable and successful plans, ensuring energy security, economic growth, and a better quality of life for the people of the two countries.
It may be recalled that a few years back Zimbabwe was subjected to shame and humiliation owing to a power debt with South Africa’s Eskom and Carhora Bassa that lasted a considerable number of years.
The challenges were further worsened by the incessant and recurrent drought that have hit both Zambia and Zimbabwe rendering Kariba, a main source of energy for both countries, less reliable.
Amid these challenges, Zimbabwe still continued to experiencing power outages in previous while government continued to solicit measures to address this challenge.
One such measure was the exemption of excise duty on solar product have seen the populace embracing the use of solar energy across various pockets of society at household level and sectors the economy including manufacturing industry, agriculture, health, mining and tourism, among others.
Additionally, government went on to introduce the net metering system for private players who have established huge solar generation system to allow them to feed excess power on to the national power grid, all in effort to ensure continuous power supply and uninterrupted production.
The Zim-Zam summit may also be viewed from a political diplomacy point of view where relations between the two countries have suffered negative casting from across some quarters that wish to destabilise either of the two countries for their personal motives.
However, the resolutions from the Zim-Zam, and other subsequent engagements, reaffirm the diplomatic ties and understanding between the two countries that share a history of cooperation, particularly during Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle.
In view of the above, the impact of the Zim-Zam Summit, in the long run will culminate into positive results for the country’s economy, development agenda and quality of life for the general populace.
