Chikoto takes helm as Zimpapers CEO

Veteran journalist Mr William Chikoto has been appointed the substantive chief executive officer of Zimpapers, the country’s largest media group, with immediate effect. The announcement was made yesterday by the company’s Board, cementing Chikoto’s elevation after serving as Acting CEO for the past ten months.

The appointment comes at a pivotal moment for Zimpapers, which this week unveiled a digital-first, fully integrated newsroom, a move designed to strengthen the group’s ability to deliver fast, accurate and multimedia-rich journalism across all platforms. The new strategy is expected to strengthen the group’s competitive edge in an era where audiences are increasingly consuming news online.

Mr Chikoto brings to the role more than three decades of newsroom leadership and editorial excellence. He previously edited The Herald and The Sunday Mail, the organisation’s flagship publications, and has been group editorial executive since 2012. He began his career at Zimpapers as a junior reporter, rising steadily through the ranks, a trajectory the Board says reflects his exceptional commitment and intimate understanding of the media landscape.

In a statement, Zimpapers Board Chairperson Mrs Doreen Sibanda expressed full confidence in his leadership.

“Mr Chikoto has successfully steered and stabilised the organisation during his tenure as Acting CEO. His rise from junior reporter to executive leadership clearly demonstrates his dedication, professionalism and passion. The Board looks forward to his continued contribution as the organisation accelerates its digital transformation,” she said.

Mr Chikoto’s career spans key editorial and managerial roles, including cadet reporter, night editor, managing editor and editor of both major national newspapers. As editorial executive, he oversaw content convergence across print, online, radio and television, and played a central role in training journalists in multimedia storytelling.

He is academically distinguished, holding a first-class Master of Arts in Leadership and Management (University of Zimbabwe), a Diploma in Journalism (Harare Polytechnic) and a Bachelor of Arts in English and Communication.

The launch of Zimpapers’ integrated newsroom this week marks a new chapter for the company, aligning its operations with global media trends and positioning it for future growth. Under Mr Chikoto’s leadership, the group is expected to deepen innovation, expand digital reach and reinforce its status as Zimbabwe’s leading multimedia news organisation.
