The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) has dismissed as false a social media article claiming that the Authority plans to introduce a tax on households using solar energy.
In a statement released today, ZERA described the circulating report as “entirely false, devoid of any truth and should be dismissed with the contempt it deserves.”
ZERA said the claims completely contradict Government’s plans to expand access to clean and affordable energy. The Authority emphasised that Zimbabwe’s recently launched National Energy Compact is focused on ensuring universal access to energy by 2030, with particular support for renewable energy technologies.
“The Government aims to ensure universal access to energy by 2030. It has already put in place mechanisms to ensure that there is increased roll-out of all energy forms including solar to ensure that ‘no one and no place is left behind,” ZERA said
To support this national goal, ZERA highlighted that several incentives are already in place to encourage households and businesses to adopt solar systems.
“Duty-free importation of solar equipment, training for solar installers to boost the industry and ensure adherence to safety standards, and net-metering regulations that allow households to supply excess energy to the grid are among the measures currently being implemented,” the Authority said.
ZERA further reassured citizens that no levy exists and none is being consideredfor installing or owning a domestic solar system.
“ZERA reassures the public that there is no levy or charge required or will be required to install or own a solar system for domestic use,” the Authority stated.
The regulator urged the public to disregard “malicious statements” circulating online, warning that such misinformation undermines national energy development efforts.
“Members of the public are therefore advised to completely ignore malicious statements as they are contrary to Government policy and priorities,” ZERA said.
The Authority encouraged citizens to follow its official communication platforms for verified updates.
