Buckle up for heavy rains…Met Department warns

Zimbabwe is set to receive heavy rains accompanied by severe thunderstorms and severe weather conditions this week.

In a joint alert issued this week, the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) and the Department of Civil Protection warned that several provinces are likely to experience intense thunderstorms, significant rainfall and potential flooding.

The advisory listed Manicaland, Masvingo, Harare Metropolitan, and parts of Mashonaland East and Central as the most at-risk areas.

According to the MSD, these regions could receive more than 50 mm of rainfall within a 24-hour period, accompanied by strong winds, hail and dangerous lightning.

A report released on Tuesday noted that a clash between cold, moisture-rich air from south-eastern South Africa and the already humid atmosphere over Zimbabwe is expected to trigger widespread storms, particularly in the east.

“These conditions pose serious risks, including flash floods, hazardous road conditions with reduced visibility, landslides and rockfalls,” the alert warned.

Authorities further urged travelers to monitor weather updates closely and follow guidance issued by local Civil Protection Units as the country enters a potentially hazardous weather spell.
