US$80m Trade Hub Nears Completion

The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has expressed strong satisfaction with the ongoing construction of the African Trade Centre in Harare, a major continental project set for commissioning early next year. Rising at the intersection of Herbert Chitepo Avenue and Seventh Street, the state-of-the-art complex financed entirely by Afreximbank at a cost exceeding US$80 million is poised to become a flagship hub for trade, investment, and economic cooperation in Africa.

The modern facility will host Afreximbank’s regional offices and feature a hotel, a conference centre, and a trade information hub, positioning Harare as a strategic player in promoting intra-African commerce.

Speaking during a site visit last Friday, Afreximbank Executive Vice President Mr Denys Denya commended the contractors for adhering to timelines and maintaining world-class standards.

“Afreximbank remains committed to doing business with Zimbabwe, and this project is evidence of that commitment. We expect the complex to play a catalytic role in attracting much-needed global capital flows to Zimbabwe,” he said.

Afreximbank President Mr George Elombi echoed the sentiment, emphasising the bank’s long-term partnership with Zimbabwe and its determination to expand economic cooperation.

“We are tapping into Zimbabwe’s development trajectory with a view to scaling up business portfolios. Our assessment shows positive indicators, and we anticipate the facility will significantly benefit Zimbabweans,” he said.

Headquartered in Cairo, Egypt, Afreximbank is a pan-African multilateral financial institution that funds development projects and supports member states in critical fiscal and monetary initiatives. Zimbabwe has long benefited from its financing, including support for key productive sectors.

Once completed, the African Trade Centre is expected to reshape Harare’s real estate landscape while enhancing Zimbabwe’s role in regional trade, investment promotion and continental economic integration.
