The United Nations in Zimbabwe has urged citizens, governments and global stakeholders to recommit to the universal protection of human dignity as the world marks Human Rights Day.
In a statement shared on X, today, the UN said the annual commemoration serves as a reminder that the defence of human rights remains essential for peace, justice and inclusive development.
“This Human Rights Day, let’s remember that every right matters. Upholding human rights is essential for everyone, everywhere. Together, we stand united for dignity and justice,” the UN Zimbabwe office said.
The message comes as countries across the world reflect on the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which turned 76 this year.
Quoting the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, the organisation underscored the need for renewed vigilance in promoting equality, safety and respect.
“On this Human Rights Day, Volker Türk reminds us to reaffirm our commitment to dignity, safety and freedom for everyone. Together, we can dismantle injustice and inspire change,” the UN Zimbabwe office posted.
The UN’s local office also encouraged citizens to play an active role in defending rights in their communities, urging individuals to speak out whenever freedoms are threatened.
“Stand up, speak out and protect human rights for all,” the message read.
The UN noted that progress in areas such as health, education, equality and peace is closely tied to how societies safeguard human rights.
The organisation said the global theme for this year reinforces the need for collective action to ensure that no one is left behind. It emphasised that addressing inequality, promoting justice and creating safe environments for all people remains central to achieving sustainable development.
Human Rights Day is observed globally on 10 December and highlights the shared responsibility of nations and citizens to ensure that fundamental freedoms are upheld without discrimination.
