Zimbabwe to host 2027 Global Prisons Conference

Zimbabwe will host the 2027 International Corrections and Prisons Association (ICPA) Annual Conference, an international event set to bring together correctional leaders, prison administrators, policymakers and researchers from across the world.

During the post-Cabinet briefing yesterday, Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Jenfan Muswere confirmed that Government had approved the hosting bid, describing the development as a significant endorsement of Zimbabwe’s correctional reform trajectory.

“Cabinet received and approved the proposal to host the 2027 International Corrections and Prisons Association Annual Conference,” Muswere stated.

He explained that the conference will serve as a global platform for strengthening cooperation and exchanging best practices in modern corrections.

“The Conference will bring together global correctional leaders, prison administrators, policymakers and researchers to strengthen collaboration and the sharing of best practices in prison management, offender rehabilitation and reintegration,” Muswere noted.

Muswere highlighted Zimbabwe’s standing within the international corrections community, pointing out that the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service is a full member of the ICPA, which strengthens the country’s credentials as host.

“The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service is a full member of the International Corrections and Prisons Association,” the Minister said.

He added that hosting the conference will raise Zimbabwe’s international profile and underline progress made in reforming the justice sector.

“Hosting the Conference will enhance the country’s international profile as a leader in correctional reforms and rehabilitation initiatives.

“It will also showcase Zimbabwe’s progress in justice sector reforms, human rights practices and modern correctional practices,” Muswere added.

Beyond institutional reforms, the Minister pointed to the economic and knowledge-sharing benefits expected from the event.

“The Conference will promote knowledge exchange and stimulate the local economy, particularly through the tourism and hospitality industries,” Minister Muswere stated.

Preparations for the 2027 conference will involve coordination across government departments and stakeholders to ensure the successful hosting of delegates and the delivery of a conference that meets international standards.

The hosting of the ICPA Annual Conference is expected to position Zimbabwe at the centre of global discussions on correctional reform, rehabilitation and reintegration, while reinforcing its engagement with international justice sector platforms.
