The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has intensified its festive season safety operations, launching a crime prevention and road safety awareness campaign at Mbare Musika in Harare aimed at curbing accidents and crime during the holiday period.
The campaign, which targeted commuters, traders and public transport operators, focused on promoting vigilance, crime prevention and responsible behaviour on the roads at a time when traffic volumes and criminal activity traditionally increase.
In a statement the ZRP National Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the operation was aimed at reminding citizens of their shared responsibility in ensuring safety during the holidays.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is urging all Zimbabweans to remain alert, safety conscious and to actively promote road safety during this festive period,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
He noted that the festive season often records an increase in road traffic accidents and opportunistic crimes, largely due to negligence, reckless driving and reduced vigilance by members of the public.
Commissioner Nyathi said special attention was placed on public service vehicle operators, whom police view as key partners in safeguarding travellers.
“We are imploring public service transport operators to contribute towards the safety of travellers by being responsible, customer focused and law-abiding citizens,” he said.
The police cautioned drivers against speeding, overloading, driving under the influence of alcohol and disregarding traffic regulations, warning that enforcement would be intensified across the country.
Members of the public were also advised to safeguard their valuables, avoid carrying large sums of money and remain cautious in crowded places such as markets, bus termini and shopping centres.
The Mbare Musika campaign forms part of the ZRP’s nationwide festive season operations, which include increased police visibility, roadblocks and community engagement programmes aimed at reducing crime and road carnage.
