Zim physician making waves in the US

Dr. Mati Hlatshwayo Davis, a distinguished Zimbabwean infectious disease physician, continues to rise as a global voice in public health.

In 2021, she made history after being appointed Public Health Director for the City of St. Louis, becoming the first Black female physician to hold the position in the city’s 257-year history. Her journey from Zimbabwe to the United States in 2015 was driven by a mission to tackle complex public health issues, including HIV and other infectious diseases.

Her career spans leadership, research, and public engagement. Dr. Hlatshwayo Davis serves as an associate editor in the Disparities and Culturally Competent Care section of the Real-Time Learning Network, an initiative supported by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Beyond her medical and academic work, she is a respected international media contributor, frequently appearing on major outlets such as CNN, BBC, and Al Jazeera. She has also penned insightful opinion articles published in Newsweek, solidifying her influence as a thought leader in global health.

Dr. Hlatshwayo Davis continues to inspire many across Zimbabwe and the diaspora through her dedication, expertise and trailblazing achievements.
