Health Ministry tightens borders after Nestlé Formula recall

Zimbabwe has placed all ports of entry on high alert following a global recall by Nestlé of a single batch of NAN Special Pro HA infant formula manufactured in Germany. Authorities say the move is meant to prevent the recalled product from slipping into the country through unofficial channels.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has confirmed that the affected batch which carries an expiry date of December 15, 2026, has not been distributed in Zimbabwe. However, precautionary surveillance measures have been activated to safeguard public health.

In an interview with the media yesterday, Permanent Secretary for Health and Child Care, Dr Aspect Maunganidze, said the Government acted swiftly after receiving official communication from Nestlé.

“The Government received communication from Nestlé regarding the global recall of a single batch of NAN Special Pro HA. While this product has not been distributed in Zimbabwe, we are on high alert in case it enters the country through unofficial means.

“We have ordered our counterparts at all ports of entry to remain vigilant. Citizens also need to check expiration dates and batch numbers on these products to be safe,” he said.

Dr Maunganidze said the latest action underscores Government’s ongoing commitment to food and consumer safety.

“This is not the first time the Government has been proactive. In 2023, we recalled a certain batch of Kambucha beverage and maize imported from Zambia which were found unfit for the local market,” he added.

Authorities are urging parents, caregivers and retailers to stay alert and immediately report any suspected presence of the recalled formula to health officials.
