Government yesterday officially opened the Ngungubane–Mataga Road at Matedzi Business Centre in Mberengwa District, marking a major milestone in upgrading road infrastructure connecting Mberengwa and Zvishavane districts.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Owen Ncube, said the project demonstrates Government’s commitment to improving rural infrastructure as a catalyst for economic development.
“The newly surfaced road will improve mobility, reduce transport costs, and enhance access to markets, health facilities, and schools for communities in both districts. This road is critical in opening up economic opportunities for our people. Improved road infrastructure enables trade, attracts investment, and supports service delivery,” Minister Ncube said.
Local business operators at Matedzi Business Centre welcomed the development, noting that the road is already stimulating economic activity in the area.
“More vehicles are now passing through this area, and this is translating into increased business for us,” said Tinashe Ndlovu, a shop owner.
Sithembile Moyo, who runs a grinding mill at the business centre, added that the improved road has eased transport challenges for both suppliers and customers. “People can now reach us easily, and this improves our daily operations,” she said.
Community leaders also praised the project, emphasizing that better road infrastructure is essential for rural development and economic growth.
The Ngungubane–Mataga Road is expected to strengthen economic linkages between Mberengwa and Zvishavane districts, contributing to improved livelihoods and creating opportunities for investment.
The project is part of the Government’s broader rural development strategy under Vision 2030, aimed at transforming infrastructure to stimulate economic growth, reduce regional inequalities, and enhance service delivery.
