Dam levels soar to 90%

Zimbabwe’s dams have risen to an average of nearly 90 percent, bringing relief to agriculture, domestic water supplies, and key economic sectors, with some reservoirs already spilling after recent rains.

In an interview with the media, yesterday, ZINWA Stakeholder Relations Officer, Tsungirirai Shoriwa, said the country’s water outlook had significantly improved.

“The country’s water security outlook is looking bright. As of this Wednesday, January 21, 2026, the national dam level average has risen to 89.9%, up from 70.9% during this time last year. Some dams are already spilling, which means river flows downstream are increasing.

“This poses a flood risk to downstream communities. We urge communities downstream of spilling dams to be on high alert, exercise extreme caution, and avoid crossing flooded rivers,” he said.

The rise in dam levels is expected to boost agricultural production as farmers expand irrigation activities. Hydroelectric power generation is also set to improve, while other sectors such as tourism are benefiting from rejuvenated water bodies.

Meanwhile, authorities have urged the public to remain alert, with rains expected to continue into the weekend.
