Minister Rwodzi intervenes in Chimanimani tourist arrest

The Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Barbara Rwodzi, has responded decisively to concerns raised by a group of foreign tourists after one of their members was wrongfully arrested in Chimanimani over a traffic-related misunderstanding.

Acting swiftly to safeguard Zimbabwe’s tourism reputation, Minister Rwodzi travelled to Chimanimani, where she was accompanied by the newly appointed Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) chief executive, Dr George Manyaya. Their visit demonstrated Government’s hands-on approach and commitment to addressing issues that may affect both international and domestic visitors.

The arrest stemmed from an accusation that the tourist had failed to meet a road safety requirement concerning the number of reflective warning triangles in his vehicle. It was later established that the matter was the result of a misunderstanding, as the supposed anomaly did not constitute a violation under existing regulations.

The incident quickly gained traction on social media, prompting immediate intervention by the Ministry to prevent any reputational damage to the country’s tourism sector.

At the time, the tourist was taking part in the ZimBho domestic tourism campaign, an initiative designed to promote travel across Zimbabwe among locals and international guests.

In a statement following the resolution of the matter, the tourist praised Zimbabwe and its people, describing his experiences as overwhelmingly positive and characterised by warmth and hospitality. He said the ZimBho campaign had inspired his travels, and noted he had been documenting his journey to share with audiences around the world.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) later issued a statement clarifying the incident. The police acknowledged the situation arose from a misunderstanding and confirmed that the officer involved had acted overzealously.

Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that law enforcement practices support national efforts to promote Zimbabwe as a welcoming, safe and tourist-friendly destination.
