Mwenezi East schools receive US$10 000 boost

Mwenezi East schools are set to benefit from improved infrastructure and youth development programmes following a donation of more than US$10 000 by legislator Sheillah Chikomo.

The donation was handed over on Wednesday at Chagomoka Primary School during a ceremony attended by community members, school authorities and local leaders.

Chagomoka Primary School received US$1 500 towards the drilling of a borehole aimed at addressing long-standing water shortages affecting learners and staff.

Chisume Primary School benefited from US$1 500 for borehole drilling, along with 25 bags of cement to support the completion of a classroom block currently under construction.

Matenga Primary School was allocated US$1 000 for classroom construction, while Vezvi Primary and Lirhanzo Primary schools each received US$1 000 towards ongoing infrastructure development projects.

Speaking at the event, MP Chikomo said the interventions were intended to improve the quality of education and ensure that rural schools have access to basic facilities.

“We want to ensure that our children learn in a conducive environment where there is clean water, adequate classrooms and proper infrastructure,” she said.

She added that any developmental efforts in the constituency must prioritise education and community welfare.

“These schools are the foundation of our communities. When we invest in them, we are investing in the future of Mwenezi East,” she said.

Chikomo said the inclusion of sport was deliberate as part of youth empowerment and community cohesion.

“We believe in supporting both education and sport because both are important in shaping responsible and disciplined young people,” she said.

Councillor Magoche welcomed the donation, describing it as a significant boost to ongoing development efforts in Ward 15.

“This is a very important intervention for our schools. The issue of water shortages and incomplete classroom blocks has been a challenge for a long time,” he said.

He added that the support would have a lasting impact on the learning environment.

“We are grateful for this gesture. It will go a long way in improving the conditions of our learners and teachers,” he said.

The donation also featured a youth sporting tournament which aimed at promoting community engagement and talent development, were winning soccer and netball teams received US$500 each and jerseys, while runners-up were awarded US$300.

The initiative is expected to accelerate ongoing development projects across Mwenezi East schools, with local leadership expressing optimism that improved water access, classroom infrastructure and youth programmes will enhance the overall learning environment
