The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation on biodiversity conservation, climate resilience and sustainable natural resource management.
The renewed commitment followed a courtesy call by UNDP Zimbabwe Resident Representative in Harare, recently.
“UNDP Resident Representative, Ayodele Odusola paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Environment, Climate and Wildlife, Evelyn Ndlovu, reaffirming our strong partnership in protecting biodiversity, promoting the sustainable use of natural resources, and advancing climate adaptation and mitigation.
“The engagement highlighted the importance of continued collaboration as Zimbabwe confronts the growing impacts of climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental degradation,” UNDP said, in a statement.
According to UNDP Zimbabwe, the partnership is already delivering measurable outcomes through programmes designed to conserve ecosystems, strengthen community resilience and improve the sustainable management of the country’s natural resources.
“Together, we are achieving tangible results in reducing wildlife poaching, preventing wildfires, restoring forests, and strengthening climate information services,” the organisation said.
UNDP Zimbabwe said these achievements demonstrate the value of coordinated action between Government and development partners in safeguarding Zimbabwe’s natural heritage while supporting sustainable livelihoods.
“Biodiversity conservation remains central to Zimbabwe’s socio-economic development, particularly as communities depend on forests, wildlife and other natural resources for food security, tourism, employment and income generation.
“Strengthening climate adaptation and mitigation initiatives will help communities better prepare for extreme weather events, improve environmental management and support the country’s transition towards a more resilient and sustainable economy,” UNDP added.
The organisation pledged its commitment to working closely with Government to implement programmes that protect ecosystems, enhance biodiversity conservation and build resilience against the impacts of climate change.
UNDP is one of Zimbabwe’s principal development partners in the environment and climate sector, supporting projects on biodiversity conservation, sustainable land and forest management, climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction and renewable energy.
The agency works with Government and other stakeholders to help Zimbabwe meet its national environmental priorities and international commitments on climate change and biodiversity conservation.
