Kariba District Clerk and acting RIDA district head, Ignitious Chiome, has been remanded in custody over the Mbuya Nehanda ferry disaster that claimed 97 lives on Lake Kariba.
Chiome, 41, appeared before the Kariba Magistrates’ Court, yesterday, facing a charge of culpable homicide. He will remain in custody until Thursday, 27 August, when his bail application is expected to be determined.
The State alleges that overloading, operational failures and administrative negligence contributed to the 11 August tragedy.
The ferry was reportedly carrying up to 180 passengers and heavy cargo, despite having an authorised capacity of 90 passengers.
Investigations are continuing, with prosecutors indicating that more arrests are expected as authorities pursue those who may have contributed to the disaster.
