A nationwide road rehabilitation programme is accelerating at pace, with significant construction milestones being reported on several key arterial routes, according to a recent update from the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development.
The strategic initiative, which spans from the southern borders to the north-western tourism hubs, is being hailed as a critical driver for economic revival, aimed at boosting trade, enhancing tourism, and improving road safety.
In a major development on the flagship Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge highway, a 16-kilometre section at Ngundu is now being dualised. This upgrade represents a significant enhancement of the crucial Beitbridge corridor, a vital trade link with South Africa.
The project is part of the broader rehabilitation and upgrading of the entire route, which is essential for facilitating smoother and more efficient movement of goods.
Simultaneously, construction is reported to be in full swing on the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road, specifically on the Hwange section. Government has emphasised that this project extends beyond mere asphalt, framing it as a strategic investment in the nation’s economic future.
“The crucial rehabilitation is not just about asphalt; it’s about boosting tourism by enhancing the gateway to the majestic Victoria Falls, strengthening trade through a more reliable corridor for business, and improving safety for all road users,” the update stated.
The project is being championed under the slogan “#KilometrebyKilometre,” symbolising a steady march towards a more connected Zimbabwe.
Further underscoring the national scale of the infrastructure drive, work has commenced on the strategic Kwekwe-Nkayi-Lupane road construction project in the Lupane area.
This initiative is designed to enhance regional connectivity in areas that have historically suffered from poor transport links, facilitating local economic growth and improving transportation for communities and commerce.
