Bulawayo ITF return fuels local tennis ranking hopes

Zimbabwe Tennis Federation (ZTF) is looking to tap into the wealth of talent being displayed at the two-week International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournament currently underway in Bulawayo.

The tournament marks the return of ITF competition to the city, offering local players a valuable platform to improve their international rankings while competing against both regional and international opponents.

The ZTF believes the event will not only boost player development but also strengthen the country’s presence on the global tennis stage.
The tournament started with qualifiers, where Zimbabwean players made the cut to the first round.

It was, however, not the best start for Bradley Nyamunokora, who lost his first match to top seed, Hong Kong’s Alex Lap Hung Hu.

The 16-year-old Millerite International School student had a torrid time losing the match 6-1,
6-2.

Despite the loss, Nyamunokora still believes he has a better chance in the second round of the tournament.

“It was a difficult game facing the top seed. I will go back and come better in the second round of the tournament. There are some things that I could have done better,” he said.

The victorious LAP hung Hu has set his sights on doing even better as the tournament progresses.

“It feels great to come to this tournament and win. I enjoy these tournaments, and I am now familiar with these courts, having participated in three editions of the tournament,” Top seed, Alex Lap Hung HU said.
90 countries, up from the usual 70, are participating in the ITF tournament, in a huge endorsement of the sport.

“We have received a huge subscription this time. It is actually an opportunity for Tennis Zimbabwe to emulate the quality of tennis being played here. It is going to be two weeks of action-packed tennis,” Tournament Director, Ruggs Chikunichawa said.

Bulawayo has become the home of the ITF junior tournaments, adding value to the city’s status as the hub of budding sporting talent.
