Mugabe, co-accused plead guilty in SA firearm and immigration case

Bellarmine Mugabe has pleaded guilty to pointing a firearm and violating South Africa’s immigration laws.

Tobias Matonhodze has pleaded guilty to attempted murder, defeating the ends of justice, illegal immigration, and unlawful possession of ammunition.

Through his lawyers, Mugabe asked the court for a non-custodial sentence, saying he is prepared to pay a fine and cover the cost of his own deportation to Zimbabwe.

The State called investigating officer Col Raj, who told the court that Matonhodze is undocumented in South Africa. He added that a firearm was used in the attempted murder charge and that the weapon was illegal. He further said both accused persons have shown no remorse and have failed to disclose the whereabouts of the firearm.

The matter was postponed to 24 April to determine whether the victim, now identified as Sipho Mahlangu, has been compensated and to establish details surrounding the missing firearm.
