Zimbabwe climbs economic rankings

Zimbabwe’s mining- and agriculture-driven economy continues to earn continental recognition, with the nation now ranked among Africa’s emerging economic powerhouses following years of comprehensive reforms implemented under the Second Republic.

According to the newly released 2026 Best Countries rankings by Business Insider Africa, Zimbabwe has emerged as one of the continent’s top-performing economies, propelled by vast mineral endowments, rising agricultural output and steadily improving macro-economic indicators.

The report highlights that “resource-rich countries such as Algeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe and Nigeria are bolstered by exports of oil, gas, minerals and agricultural products,” placing Zimbabwe among nations shaping Africa’s ongoing economic transformation.

Analysts attribute this progress to President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s bold economic policy thrust, which has emphasised mining expansion, agricultural recovery, infrastructure development and sound fiscal management since 2017. Under the Second Republic, Zimbabwe has posted notable growth in gold, lithium, platinum and tobacco production, while Government-backed programmes have significantly boosted wheat and maize output.

Reaffirming the centrality of mining and agriculture to national development, President Mnangagwa recently noted that these sectors remain pivotal to achieving Vision 2030, saying: “Our economy continues to be driven by strong performance in mining and agriculture, sectors which remain critical pillars towards the attainment of Vision 2030.”

The mining sector, in particular, has emerged as a dominant economic driver. In the first quarter of 2026, the Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe reported robust mineral export earnings, spurred by high global demand for gold, lithium and platinum. The corporation indicated that these exports are generating crucial foreign currency while cementing Zimbabwe’s status as one of Africa’s leading mining jurisdictions.

Agriculture has likewise remained a cornerstone of economic resurgence, with irrigation expansion, mechanisation support and climate-proofed farming models helping to strengthen national food security and stimulate export growth.

The 2026 Best Countries ranking assessed nations on governance, economic performance, infrastructure development, opportunity, natural environment and overall quality of life. Zimbabwe’s rising prominence reflects the combined impact of its rich resource base and sustained, resilience-driven reforms aimed at fostering long-term economic stability and growth.
