Zimbabwe marks international day of families

Zimbabwe has joined the global community in marking the International Day of Families, with the Government underscoring its commitment to safeguarding and strengthening families as the cornerstone of national development.

Addressing a media briefing in Harare yesterday, Women’s Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Minister Senator Monica Mutsvangwa announced that national commemorations will be held this Friday in Lupane District.

Senator Mutsvangwa said the commemorations come at a time when families continue to face multiple social and economic pressures.

She cited growing inequalities, poverty, unemployment, drug and substance abuse, gender-based violence, child neglect and limited access to essential services as major threats to family stability and children’s well-being.

“These challenges undermine family stability and negatively affect the future of children. In response, my Ministry continues to play a central role in promoting gender equality, women’s empowerment, community development and social inclusion,” she said.

The Minister highlighted that the Ministry is implementing the National Gender Policy, which seeks to advance social justice and inclusive sustainable development. The policy prioritises equitable access to leadership roles, economic opportunities, education, healthcare, clean energy, information and digital technologies. It also emphasises disability inclusion, climate resilience and the prevention of gender-based violence.

She added that gender mainstreaming across Government programmes remains vital in reducing discrimination and ensuring that every member of society can benefit from national development.

A major focus area, she said, remains the prevention and response to Gender-Based Violence, which continues to expose women and children to heightened vulnerability. The Ministry is conducting nationwide awareness campaigns on domestic violence, child marriages, abuse and other harmful practices, while strengthening protection, rehabilitation and support services for survivors.

Alongside the commemorations, the Ministry will also host the Matabeleland North Business Expo, providing Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) with a platform to showcase products, establish market linkages and network with stakeholders.

“As we commemorate the International Day of Families 2026, I urge all stakeholders to work together to create environments where families can thrive and where children are protected, nurtured and empowered to realise their full potential,” Senator Mutsvangwa said.

She encouraged Zimbabweans across the country to participate in activities and programmes that will follow the official launch in recognition of the importance of strong, resilient families.
