President Emmerson Mnangagwa has paid glowing tribute to the late National Hero, Major General (Retired) Evaristo Dzihwema, describing him as a disciplined, fearless and dedicated liberation war fighter whose legacy will continue to inspire generations of Zimbabweans.
Speaking at the burial of the late national hero at the National Heroes Acre in Harare on Monday, President Mnangagwa said Major General (Rtd) Dzihwema distinguished himself through courage and unwavering commitment after joining the liberation struggle during Zimbabwe’s fight for independence.
“Major General (Retired) Evaristo Dzihwema answered the call of duty during our liberation struggle with courage, discipline and patriotism. His service to the nation was exemplary and distinguished,” said President Mnangagwa.
The President said the late military commander was recognised for his outstanding contribution to the country through several national honours, including the Liberation Medal, the Independence Medal and the Long and Exemplary Service Medal.
Beyond his military career, President Mnangagwa said Major General (Rtd) Dzihwema continued serving the nation in Government as Principal Director responsible for Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment in the then Ministry of Youth, Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment.
“Even after leaving the military, he remained committed to national service, contributing to the empowerment and development of our people through Government,” he said.
Turning to national development, President Mnangagwa said the Second Republic continues to register tangible economic gains that are improving the livelihoods of Zimbabweans.
“Our development programmes are bearing fruit and we continue to record tangible economic gains that are transforming communities and improving the quality of life of our people,” he said.
The President also assured Zimbabweans living abroad that Government has put in place comprehensive measures to facilitate their seamless, safe, orderly and dignified return and reintegration.
“To all our fellow Zimbabweans in the diaspora, I assure you that the Government has put in place comprehensive measures to facilitate your seamless, safe, orderly and dignified reintegration. Zimbabwe remains your home and you are always welcome to return and contribute to the country’s development,” said President Mnangagwa.
He urged communities, traditional leaders and churches to support returning citizens while calling on the private sector and other well-wishers to partner with the Government in assisting the reintegration process.
