The City of Harare has confirmed a scabies outbreak in Hopley, Southlea Park and Stoneridge suburbs, with children under the age of 12 accounting for the majority of reported cases.
In a statement, the City Health Department said the outbreak was first detected in mid-June and has since triggered an intensified public health response aimed at containing further spread of the highly contagious skin condition.
“The majority of cases are among children below 12 years. Scabies is a highly contagious skin condition caused by microscopic mites that burrow into the skin,” the department said.
It said common symptoms include intense itching, particularly at night, skin rashes and sores caused by scratching, which can result in secondary bacterial infections.
The department said scabies spreads mainly through prolonged skin-to-skin contact and through sharing infested clothing, bedding and towels.
Residents experiencing persistent itching, skin rashes or other symptoms associated with scabies have been urged to seek medical attention promptly to prevent further transmission.
“Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent further spread,” the department said.
As part of efforts to contain the outbreak, the City Health Department has activated response measures, including enhanced disease surveillance, case management, health education and community awareness campaigns.
Health teams are working with affected communities to identify cases, provide treatment and educate residents on preventive measures.
The department urged residents to cooperate with health personnel and follow guidance provided by rapid response teams as efforts to control the outbreak continue.
Scabies is a treatable condition, and health authorities have emphasised the importance of early detection and proper treatment to prevent outbreaks from escalating within communities.
