The Josiah Magama Tongogara Monument and Health Centre in Massinga District of Nyambane Province, Mozambique, are now ready for commissioning following the completion of construction works.
Speaking during yesterday’s Post Cabinet Briefing, Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Soda Zhemu, announced that the monument and health facility are complete and ready for official commissioning.
“The project forms part of ongoing efforts by the Governments of Zimbabwe and Mozambique to immortalise the legacy of the late General Josiah Magama Tongogara, whose contribution to Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle remains deeply embedded in the country’s history.
The late General Josiah Magama Tongogara perished in a road traffic accident at Magacala Village in Massinga District on 26th December, 1979 while travelling from Maputo to Chimoio,” said Dr Zhemu.
He said the construction of the monument and health centre demonstrates the continued commitment to recognising General Tongogara’s immense contribution to Zimbabwe’s independence while preserving the shared liberation history between Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
“The construction of the Monument and the Health Centre are part of continuing efforts to recognize and immortalize the immense contribution of the late General,” he said.
Dr Zhemu said construction works at the health centre have since been completed through a collaborative effort between the Governments of Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
“Zimbabwe funded and constructed the Outpatient Block, three Staff Quarters and a Maternity Block, while Mozambique constructed the Administration Block, a Waiting Mothers’ Shelter and a Laundry Facility.
The Project is ready for commissioning, and the amenities are expected to transform the livelihoods of the local Mozambican communities which assisted during Zimbabwe’s War of Liberation, through access to a modern health facility,” said Dr Zhemu.
The commissioning of the monument and health centre also underscores the enduring diplomatic and historical bonds between Zimbabwe and Mozambique, forged during the liberation struggle and sustained through continued cooperation in development initiatives.
General Tongogara, who was Commander of the Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army (ZANLA), played a pivotal role in Zimbabwe’s liberation before his death in December 1979, just months before the country attained independence in April 1980.
