Parliament of Zimbabwe has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting youth participation in democratic governance after hosting 20 learners from St John’s College’s Model United Nations Society for an educational tour of the New Parliament Building.
In a statement, yesterday, Parliament of Zimbabwe described the visit as an educational and inspiring experience aimed at cultivating civic consciousness and leadership among young people.
“Twenty learners from St John’s College, who are members of the St John’s College Model United Nations Society, had the privilege of visiting the Parliament of Zimbabwe for an educational and inspiring experience,” Parliament said.
The institution said exposing learners to parliamentary processes plays a vital role in enhancing their understanding of democratic governance and encouraging them to become informed and active citizens.
“The visit commenced with a guided tour of the New Parliament Building, where the learners explored both the National Assembly and the Senate chambers.
The tour provided them with valuable insight into the distinct roles and responsibilities of each House, as well as Parliament’s legislative, oversight and representative functions,” said Parliament of Zimbabwe.
Parliament noted that one of the most memorable moments of the visit was the opportunity for the learners to witness parliamentary proceedings as they unfolded in the National Assembly.
“A highlight of the visit was the opportunity to observe a live sitting of the National Assembly from the Honourable Speaker’s Gallery.
During the proceedings, the learners received a special acknowledgment from the Speaker of the National Assembly, making the occasion particularly memorable and underscoring Parliament’s commitment to promoting youth engagement in democratic governance,” Parliament said.
The special recognition accorded to the learners highlighted Parliament’s continued efforts to bridge the gap between democratic institutions and young people by creating opportunities for meaningful civic engagement.
