AKIPRESS.COM – More than 7,000 excess deaths were recorded in France following two consecutive severe heatwaves through July 22, Bloomberg reported.
At least 5,764 excess deaths occurred between June 17 and July 2, with an additional 1,243 recorded from July 3 to July 22, according to a statement published Wednesday by Santé Publique France.
The public health agency noted that individuals aged 75 and older accounted for three-quarters of the deaths during the second heatwave. These figures are expected to be revised by health authorities later in the summer.
July marked the hottest month on record in France since 1900. The government estimates that the extreme heat could cost the country up to 15 billion euros ($17.5 billion).
In response, the government has already allocated 100 million euros in emergency funds to purchase air conditioners, fans, and other essential equipment for hospitals. Additionally, more than 100 million euros in aid is being mobilized for housing reconstruction and tax relief for businesses impacted by wildlifes.
