UNDP backs solar power upgrade at Kwekwe Hospital

A new solar power system installed at Kwekwe General Hospital is improving critical healthcare services for patients battling silicosis and strengthening the hospital’s capacity to provide uninterrupted medical care.

In a statement yesterday, the United Nations Development Program Zimbabwe said the installation of a 140-kilovolt-ampere solar power system at the Midlands-based referral hospital was made possible through the Government of Zimbabwe–Global Fund partnership, with the initiative aimed at ensuring reliable electricity supply for essential hospital operations.

“Strong partnerships are delivering real impact for patients and health workers in Kwekwe.

Through the Government of Zimbabwe–Global Fund partnership, UNDP Zimbabwe supported a 140-kVA solar power system at Kwekwe General Hospital helping keep oxygen support, diagnostic services and critical care running for patients battling silicosis,” UNDP Zimbabwe said.

The agency described the development as a major step in strengthening Zimbabwe’s healthcare delivery systems through sustainable energy solutions.

“A powerful example of sustainable energy strengthening health systems and saving lives.

The solar installation is expected to reduce disruptions caused by power outages, particularly in critical wards and departments that depend on constant electricity supply for life-saving equipment and patient monitoring systems,” the agency added.

The project also highlights growing collaboration between the Government, international development partners and global health financing institutions in strengthening Zimbabwe’s public health infrastructure.

“The initiative demonstrates how strategic partnerships can directly improve patient outcomes and working conditions for frontline healthcare personnel,” UNDP Zimbabwe said.

Kwekwe General Hospital is one of the key referral health institutions in Midlands Province, serving mining communities and surrounding districts. Silicosis has become a growing public health concern in Zimbabwe due to increased mining activities and occupational exposure to silica dust.

The latest intervention at Kwekwe General Hospital comes as Zimbabwe continues to scale up investments in resilient healthcare infrastructure amid increasing demand for specialised treatment services in mining and industrial communities.
