President Emmerson Mnangagwa has expressed sorrow following the death of opposition leader Linda Tsungirirai Masarira, describing her as a courageous and outspoken political figure who contributed to national dialogue, peace and development in Zimbabwe.
In a condolence message issued yesterday, President Mnangagwa said the death of Ms Masarira, leader of the Labour, Economists and African Democrats (LEAD) Party, was a great loss to her family, women in Zimbabwe and the nation at large.
“On behalf of ZANU PF, Government, the people of Zimbabwe, my family and myself, I extend heartfelt condolences to the Masarira family, relatives, and friends.
May they find strength in the knowledge that their daughter, sister, mother and compatriot served her country with conviction and courage,” he said.
The President described Ms Masarira as a bold voice in Zimbabwe’s political and civic landscape who consistently advocated for dialogue, constitutionalism and national unity.
“Ms Masarira was a bold and outspoken voice in Zimbabwe’s political and civic space. She consistently advocated for dialogue, constitutionalism, and national unity at a time when the country needed sober voices,” he said.
President Mnangagwa said the late opposition politician was fearless in defending Zimbabwe’s sovereignty and made significant contributions towards progressive civic engagement and shaping a national narrative centred on unity, peace and development.
He also acknowledged her involvement in civil society, the media and political platforms such as the Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD), saying she demonstrated that Zimbabweans from different political backgrounds could work together despite their differences.
“Through her work in civil society, in the media, and in political platforms such as the Political Actors Dialogue, she demonstrated that Zimbabweans of diverse political backgrounds can disagree without being enemies, and can work together for the common good,” he said.
President Mnangagwa said Ms Masarira’s legacy should inspire young women to actively and responsibly participate in national affairs.
“May the legacy of Cde Masarira inspire others, especially young women, to participate actively and responsibly in the affairs of their country,” he said.
He added that he hoped the Masarira family would find comfort in her contributions to the country while the nation shared in their grief.
“May her soul rest in eternal peace,” said the President.
