France brace for Morocco battle

The FIFA World Cup enters its decisive stage tonight as France begin their quest for a third global crown with a highly anticipated quarter-final clash against Morocco at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

The tournament, which has produced a month of thrilling football, has now been reduced to eight contenders, with France emerging as one of the standout sides after a series of dominant attacking displays.

Les Bleus have scored 14 goals in five matches, with captain Kylian Mbappe accounting for seven of those strikes. The Parisian forward is among the leading contenders for the Golden Boot, alongside Argentina’s Lionel Messi, Norway’s Erling Haaland and England’s Harry Kane.

The encounter will be a repeat of the 2022 World Cup semi-final in Qatar, where France defeated Morocco 2-0 before eventually losing the final to Argentina.

However, Morocco arrive with renewed confidence after an impressive campaign that has seen them combine defensive discipline, technical ability and tactical intelligence. The African champions progressed through the group stage before overcoming the Netherlands and Canada to reach the last eight.

The Atlas Lions will look to coach Mohamed Ouahbi’s tactical approach as they attempt to produce another historic upset and become the first African nation to lift the World Cup trophy.

The winner of the France-Morocco tie will meet either Spain or Belgium in the semi-finals.

Spain advanced to the quarter-finals after eliminating Portugal 1-0, while Belgium have grown stronger as the tournament has progressed. The Red Devils recovered from a difficult group stage to defeat Senegal 3-2 before dismantling the United States 4-1 in the last 16.

Meanwhile, defending champions Argentina face Switzerland on Saturday as they continue their pursuit of becoming the first team since Brazil in 1962 to win back-to-back World Cups.

Argentina survived a scare against Cape Verde before edging through 3-2 in extra time, then staged a dramatic comeback against Egypt, recovering from a two-goal deficit to win 3-2, with Messi inspiring the late turnaround.

The winner of that tie will face either Norway or England, who booked their place in the last eight after a dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium.

England midfielder Jude Bellingham believes the result has strengthened the team’s confidence ahead of their clash with a dangerous Norway side led by prolific striker Haaland.

“I’m convinced of it and I hope that a win like this can give them that same conviction that they’re top players and we shouldn’t fear anyone,” Bellingham said.

With the tournament reaching its climax, the remaining eight teams are now battling not only for survival but for a place in World Cup history
