UNDP pledges continued support for Zim’s SME growth

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Zimbabwe’s economic transformation by promoting innovation, digital and financial inclusion, and strengthening the Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) ecosystem through strategic partnerships.

Speaking at the Inaugural National SMEs and Cooperatives Indaba held in Harare, recently, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative for Operations, Carine Yengayenge, said empowering MSMEs remains critical to unlocking sustainable economic growth and creating opportunities for millions of Zimbabweans.

“UNDP remains committed to supporting Zimbabwe’s development journey by fostering innovation, digital and financial inclusion, and strengthening the MSME ecosystem through strategic partnerships.

UNDP recognises the vital role that SMEs and cooperatives play in driving economic development, employment creation and poverty reduction across the country,” she added.

She said strategic partnerships between Government, development partners, financial institutions and the private sector are crucial in addressing challenges faced by MSMEs, including limited access to finance, technology and business development services.

“Through collaboration and inclusive approaches, we can unlock the full potential of MSMEs and cooperatives to contribute meaningfully to Zimbabwe’s socio-economic development.

UNDP will continue working with stakeholders to support initiatives that promote entrepreneurship, innovation and sustainable enterprise development,” Yengayenge added

The inaugural indaba brought together policymakers, development partners, financial institutions, business leaders and entrepreneurs to deliberate on strategies for strengthening the MSME sector and promoting inclusive economic growth.

The gathering also highlighted the importance of digital and financial inclusion in expanding economic opportunities for small businesses, particularly in rural and underserved communities.
