Zimbabwe and China have deepened cooperation in agricultural science and technology with the commissioning of a joint laboratory expected to accelerate research into smart farming, agricultural ecology and cash crop production.
The China-Zimbabwe Belt and Road Joint Laboratory on Agriculture Ecology and Cash Crops is expected to strengthen Zimbabwe’s capacity in high-end computing, agro-ecological data analysis and modern agricultural research.
The facility was commissioned as the two countries continue to expand cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, with science and technology emerging as a key area of bilateral engagement.
Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Zhou Ding said the laboratory represented an important milestone in the growing scientific partnership between the two countries.
“All these gains have enriched and enhanced our collaboration, and paved the way for the launch of the China-Zimbabwe Belt and Road Joint Laboratory and its Academic Committee,” he said.
Ambassador Zhou said the facility, supported through a Chinese Government grant, would provide Zimbabwe with advanced technological capacity to support agricultural research and innovation.
“The Joint Laboratory being inaugurated today is a key deliverable of the Belt and Road Science, Technology and Innovation Action Plan,” he said.
He added that the investment had already enhanced Zimbabwe’s high-end computing capabilities, creating a stronger technological foundation for agro-ecological analysis and smart agriculture research.
“The Chinese government-supported-by-Chinese government grant has greatly boosted Zimbabwe’s high-end computing capacity, providing robust technical backing for agro-ecological data analysis, smart agriculture research and modern farming,” Ambassador Zhou said.
The laboratory is expected to bring together researchers and academics from Zimbabwe and China to develop technology-driven solutions to challenges affecting agricultural production.
Its areas of focus include agricultural ecology, cash crops, smart farming and the application of advanced computing and data analysis in agriculture.
Ambassador Zhou said the initiative was part of China’s wider effort to promote international scientific and technological cooperation.
By the end of 2025, China had partnered with 50 countries to establish 70 joint laboratories, creating an international network aimed at strengthening scientific innovation and knowledge exchange.
For Zimbabwe, the laboratory could help bridge gaps in agricultural research and technology while supporting efforts to improve productivity and build climate-resilient farming systems.
The initiative also aligns with Zimbabwe’s drive to modernise agriculture through technology, research and innovation, while strengthening value chains and improving the competitiveness of the agricultural sector.
As cooperation between Harare and Beijing continues to expand, the joint laboratory is expected to serve as a platform for translating scientific research into practical solutions for farmers and the wider agricultural economy.
