Construction of a modern US$4.7 million shopping mall at Gokwe Centre is expected to stimulate economic growth, create employment and improve access to essential services for communities in Gokwe South.
The development, being undertaken by the Mining Industry Pension Fund (MIPF), is part of the Government’s broader drive to modernise infrastructure and accelerate socio-economic development in line with the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2).
The multimillion-dollar project is expected to attract new investment into Gokwe, expand the town’s commercial base and bring modern retail and other essential services closer to residents.
Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Owen Ncube, said the development reflected Government’s commitment to decentralising services while creating a conducive environment for investment and business growth.
“This demonstrates the New Dispensation’s desire to bring services closer to the people and commitment towards the creation of a conducive business and investment climate under the able and visionary leadership of His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Cde Dr Mnangagwa,” he said.
The project dovetails with the Government’s transformational, modernisation and industrialisation agenda under the mantra “Nyika Inovakwa Nevene Vayo/Ilizwe Lakhiwa Ngabanikazi Balo.”
Residents have welcomed the development, describing it as a major milestone that will transform the town while creating opportunities for local communities.
“It is a massive, modern project that brings services closer to the people. We want to thank our Government for bringing development closer to the people. This will certainly transform Gokwe, and we are happy,” said one resident.
Another resident said the project was already benefiting the community through employment creation and improved access to essential services.
“We now have access to modern shops and services locally, which also means more employment opportunities. Our children also got employment here. This mall will also play a crucial role in giving us critical services,” the resident said.
Beyond providing modern shopping facilities, the mall is expected to strengthen Gokwe Centre’s role as a commercial hub, support small and medium-sized enterprises and generate further economic opportunities for surrounding communities.
