The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said a 30-year-old Zvishavane man has been sentenced to an effective 54 months in prison after he stabbed his village head three times and damaged property worth US$210 following a dispute over his presence in the area.
In a statement yesterday the prosecution said the incident occurred on August 7, 2026, at about 6pm when the complainant, who resides in the same village as Dzingisai, was at his homestead.
“On the 7th of August 2026, at around 1800 hours, the victim who resides in the same village as the offender, was at his homestead when Dzingisai arrived and threatened to kill him,” the NPAZ said.
According to the prosecution authority, Dzingisai was angry with the village head whom he accused of interfering with his stay in the village by reporting his presence to the police whenever he returned to the area.
“The offender accused the victim of disrupting his stay in the village by reporting his presence to the police whenever he returned to the area,” the NPAZ said.
The confrontation subsequently turned violent when Dzingisai allegedly produced a knife and attacked the village head.
“The offender then produced a knife and stabbed the complainant twice in the chest and once in the abdomen,” the NPAZ said.
After attacking the victim, Dzingisai allegedly went outside the homestead and damaged 14 window panes and the main door before fleeing from the scene.
“After the stabbing, he went outside and damaged 14D11 window panes and the main door before fleeing the scene.
The injured victim was rushed to hospital for medical attention, while a report was made to the police, resulting in Dzingisai’s arrest,”the NPAZ added.
Dzingisai was initially sentenced to 84 months’ imprisonment, with 24 months suspended for five years on condition that he does not commit a similar offence during that period.
A further six months were suspended on condition that he restitutes US$210 for the damaged property, leaving him with an effective 54-month prison term.
The NPAZ said the sentence demonstrated its commitment to ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes are held accountable.
“The NPAZ remains committed to the effective prosecution of violent crimes and ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable for their actions,” the authority said.
It urged members of the public to avoid resorting to violence when resolving disagreements.
“The NPAZ urges members of the public to resolve disputes amicably or seek third party mediation,” it said.
