Scottland will become the first Zimbabwean club to host an international match at the National Sports Stadium after the venue was approved by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The Mabvuku-based side will welcome Eswatini outfit Nsingizini Hotspurs in the CAF Champions League preliminary round on September 6.
The approval marks the return of CAF interclub football to Zimbabwe’s biggest football venue after local teams were forced to stage continental matches outside the country due to venue homologation challenges.
Scottland had initially been expected to host its continental debut outside Zimbabwe, but the CAF clearance has allowed the club to play in front of its home supporters.
Scottland secretary-general, Fortune Bgwoni, confirmed the change of venue to the media.
The development is expected to provide a major boost to Zimbabwean football by reducing the financial and logistical burden associated with hosting international matches outside the country.
The National Sports Stadium last hosted a cleared international fixture in 2021, when the Warriors faced Ethiopia in a 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
Almost five years later, international football is set to return to the iconic venue when Scottland hosts Nsingizini Hotspurs on September 6.
