Zimbabwe’s spirited late-order fightback was not enough to rescue them from an early batting collapse as the Chevrons fell to a 43-run defeat against South Africa in the FNB T20I Tri-Series at Namibia Cricket Ground on Tuesday.
After winning the toss and opting to bat, South Africa posted 185 for seven, with Zimbabwe keeping the Proteas in check through an impressive spell from off-spinner Wessly Madhevere, who claimed three wickets for 20 runs.
However, Zimbabwe’s chase quickly unravelled against a disciplined South African attack, with the Chevrons slumping to 105 for nine and seemingly destined for a heavy defeat.
Captain Sikandar Raza refused to give up, producing a blistering 45-run counter-attack to briefly raise hopes of an unlikely recovery.
Raza attacked the South African pacers with a flurry of boundaries before his dismissal brought an end to Zimbabwe’s best chance of an extraordinary comeback.
Newman Nyamhuri then joined Kundai Matigimu to launch a fearless late assault, clearing the ropes and frustrating the Proteas bowlers as the pair produced an entertaining tail-end partnership.
Although their fireworks could not overturn the damage inflicted by the top-order collapse, Zimbabwe managed to reduce the margin of defeat to 43 runs.
The Chevrons now turn their attention to Thursday’s crucial clash against Namibia, where victory will be essential if they are to keep their hopes of reaching the final alive.
